A new publication by the University of Bologna explores what actually drives alternative protein companies’ performance by examining how European alternative protein companies view the factors shaping their success.

Through semi-structured interviews, the study provides key insights on enablers and barriers influencing company performance. A mix of enablers - investments in R&D, highly skilled team, and retailers participation - and barriers - low consumer acceptance, financial and technological constraints to scalability, uncertainties regarding market growth, and regulation hurdles - calls for strategic actions to support the continued growth of the market.

The paper "Enabling the sustainable protein transition: Alternative protein companies’ perspective on key factors influencing companies’ performance in Europe" is authored by PhD candidate Chiara Benussi and Prof. Antonella Samoggia from our project partner Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences - University of Bologna, Italy.
